Last week Tuesday, we participated in two separate Lā Kūʻokoʻa events at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.
Native Hawaiian Student Services (NHSS) welcomed Hilinaʻi Sai-Dudoit and Kapaiaʻala Earle to speak about their work with nūpepa ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi in celebration of Hawaiian Independence Day. Students and faculty learned the differences between He Aupuni Palapala and past iterations of Hawaiian language newspaper preservation projects, and how it builds upon the works of the 1970s, ’80s, and early 2000s.

The 2023 International Indigenous Librarians’ Forum (IILF) held a Lā Kūʻokoʻa celebration at UH Mānoa’s Kamakakūokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies. Through Bishop Museum, He Aupuni Palapala project staff Kilinoe Kimura and Pualani Steele were invited to join artists, book vendors, and other community organizations to run an information table and engage with IILF attendees about the importance of indigenous primary resources and modern-day preservation and digitization practices.
