Members are the heart of our Bishop Museum ʻOhana! Meet Paula, a Bishop Museum Patron member from Hilo

We’d love to hear your #BishopMuseumStory! If you’re willing to share, please reach out to us through this form.

Why did you decide to become a member of Bishop Museum?

Even though we are off-island members we still decided to join Bishop Museum so that we can benefit from all of the programs and events Bishop Museum has to offer. We wanted to be able to share with our keiki as much as we can about their Islands and their culture. Joining Bishop Museum will our keiki learn and grow in their culture over the years.

What has been a memorable Bishop Museum visit, exhibit, or event for you and your family?

Both of my sons, Kameron and Kullen visited Bishop Museum with their school on their 4th grade trip. It was the best part of their trip. The sharks and whales hanging in Hawaiian Hall were so exciting to them. They were so amazed to see all of the historical and cultural treasures. Learning about their culture that day opened up so many questions and made them want to learn more.

What is your favorite benefit associated with your Bishop Museum membership?

I love that the family membership includes up to six children, since we have four! We love that the Bishop Museum membership also gives us access to all of the virtual events. Since we live in Hilo, we cannot benefit from many in-person visits so these virtual activities allow us to still be a part of the Museum, and learn so much! We are looking forward to the monthly livestreamed Planetarium events and the virtual tours of current exhibits.

How does our mission resonate with you as a resident or visitor to Hawaiʻi?

The Bishop Museum’s mission is to inspire the community and teach everyone about Hawaiian history and culture. I resonate with that because my goal is to teach my keiki all that I can about their great culture so that they can one day share that with their own keiki.

What are you looking forward to on your next visit to Bishop Museum?

We are looking forward to being there together as a family and learn about the history of Hawaiʻi. We are so excited to see all of the current exhibits and the Planetarium shows. We hope to make a trip soon!
