This article from the January 25, 1897 issue of the Hawaiian newspaper, Ka Makaainana, speaks of the formation of the Hāna branch of the Hui Aloha ʻĀina. The Patriotic League’s objective was:
The object of this Association is to preserve and maintain, by all legal and peaceful means and measures, the Independent Autonomy of the Islands of Hawaii nei; and, if the preservation of our Independence be rendered impossible, our object shall then be to exert all peaceful and legal efforts to secure for the Hawaiian People and Citizens the continuance of their Civil Rights.
—Excerpt from the 1893 Hui Aloha ʻĀina Constitution.

The Women’s Patriotic League of Hāna
The women of the Uakea mist of Hāna have established a Patriotic League for themselves, and it stands now with much enthusiasm by the women; far distance was of no concern when walking. Some of them had to walk several miles.
The officers of this association have been chosen, they being:
Mrs. G. P. Wailehua, President
Mrs. J.N.P. Kahilina, Vice President
Mrs. Kauai Kaua, Honorary President
Mrs. G. P. Kauimakaole, First Secretary
Mrs. J. W. H. Momoa, Second Secretary
Mrs. J. Lohiau, Treasurer.
There are five members that are the Advisory Committee[?], and eight members on the Executive Board, which leaves thirteen fellows left and they are members. The women’s association is moving forward.
Would you please, O President of the Women of the Archipelago living in Honolulu, answer whether the Central Association of the Women in Honolulu has a constitution, and to please show it to our secretary.
Humbly,
Mrs. G. P. Kauimakaole,
Secretary.
Makaʻalae, Hāmoa, Jan. 15, 1897.
In the Archives at Bishop Museum, there are a group of ledgers listing the names of the branch members of the Women’s Patriotic League. Each of those ledgers is special, but this one for Hāna is extra special—it not only lists the place of birth of each person, but it also gives their occupation.
